Senator representing Abia North Senatorial district, Senator Mao Ohuabunwa has expressed his dissatisfaction over his defeat by Senator elect, Orji Uzor Kalu, in the 2019 Senatorial election.
Abia North Senator elect, Mr. Orji Uzor Kalu, who has been given certificate of return by INEC, defeated Senator Mao Ohuabunwa with over 10, 000 votes.
Senator Ohuabunwa is asking for a supplementary election in the district because he believes that the margin of victory is lower than the cancelled votes.
Speaking on the matter, Abia North PDP lawyer, Mr. Upkai Ukairo, revealed the reason for Senator Ohuabunwa’s grievances. Mr. Ukairo quoted the electoral act section 26 and 53. It says:
“When they margin of lead between the two leading candidates in an election is not in excess of the total number of voters registered in polling unit where elections are not held or voided in line with section 26 and 53 of electoral act, the returning officer shall decline to make a return until polls have taken place in the affected polling units and results collected into the relevant forms for declaration and return”
Speaking further, Mr Ukairo revealed that the cancelled and voided votes was over 38, 000. Hence, there are over 28, 000 votes outstanding. It is therefore on those bases that Senator Ohuabunwa is asking that a rerun or a supplementary election be conducted by INEC in Abia North senatorial district.
Mr. Ukairo said that Senator Ohuabunwa has written a petition to INEC but nothing has been done.
It is not yet certain as to whether Senator Ohuabunwa will forward his petition to election tribunal.
